Virtual Bridge Building Challenges

Go to http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/bridge/challenge/index.html
Test your engineering skills and try to match the right bridge to the right
location. But, before you start, learn something about the engineering technology
of bridge building at these sites:
1. Bridges homepage http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/bridge/index.html
2. Bridge Basics link http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/bridge/basics.html
3. Types of bridges http://www32.brinkster.com/redjeep/bridges/types.htm
These will tell what engineering techniques are used and how spans have to be
constructed for distances and forces. There are also links to examples of world
famous bridges.
and this site has more spectacular bridge links
http://larryferlazzo.edublogs.org/2010/03/05/the-best-images-of-spectacular-bridges-
how-students-can-make-their-own/

Then take up a challenge: Choose one of these “virtual” bridge building exercises
OR try a real bridge building exercise with one of the challenges in the library.
Larry Ferlazzo’s site has a pdf guide to a can, corrugated cardboard & spagetti
stick bridge.

1. Build a bridge for Craggy Rock - you can choose from 4 bridge builds.
